How to preserve digital memories for the long term.
Long-term preservation is stronger when irreplaceable memories do not depend on one account, device, or provider. Use independent copies, ordinary exportable formats, separate backups, and periodic checks.
Use more than one copy
Keep a service copy alongside independent copies under your control so one failure does not erase an irreplaceable memory.
Make exports usable
Prefer ordinary file formats that can be opened outside one provider’s interface and periodically verify that important exports still open.
Review the plan annually
Check backups, recipient details, Guardian contacts, and provider continuity information as a long-lived future-message plan evolves.
